The Power of the Pen
by Jennifer Geronaitis
Editors Note: A few years ago I had the opportunity to
rummage through letters written during the Civil War. I held pieces of
history in my hand as I read heartfelt notes, pen on paper in beautiful
penmanship from soldiers to their loved ones at home. The importance of
expression was clear and the value to both the writer and recipient was
clear. For the soldier the act of writing took them "home" and
away from the daily stress and discomforts of war. For their families
a reminder of the
person forever in their hearts.
Today letters are still important in society. And although we all enjoy
wonderful modern conveniences in the 21st Century there is no replacement
for the hand written note. Today we are all living busy lives and often
times notes are written quickly and hastily. However, when special time
is put aside to express their deepest feelings and thoughts it shows and
can be quite powerful. When written during a quiet moment in the midst
of a busy day writing can be a type of meditation in it's own right taking
the mind far away from the stress and strain of daily life. When received
at the right moment a wonderfully written note can completely change a
recipients disposition.
Some people have no difficulty expressing themselves in person or in
writing while others may find it difficult. Personal notes rarely fail
when written from the heart. Business notes are a little more difficult.
There are many helpful books written by Emily Post to assist with the
latter. Regardless, it is important to write notes throughout ones lifetime
in ones personal life as well as business. It is as important for men
as it is for women and never too late too start. If possible writing Thank
you notes should begin in childhood as soon as one is able to write his
or her name.

Content
Content should be as diverse and personable as the individual. The best
style is to be yourself and write as if you were talking to the person
who will be receiving the letter. Thank you notes are particularly important
and will be written more often than any other type of correspondence in
ones lifetime. See tips on how to write a meaningful message.

Closing a Letter
When writing personal notes this is dependent on the nearness of the
friendship and familiarity. In business keep closing things professional
like:
Sincerely, Yours Respectfully, Cordially Yours Etc.
Personal Notes vs. Business
There are many rules associated with business writing which are not required
for personal correspondence. The following basic rules apply for both
types of letters. Use familiar phrases and language. Use sound judgment
and good taste. State what you mean.
Postcards
Postcards are useful for business purposes for promotional purposes but
are considered impolite when sending personal notes. Personal notes should
be enclosed in a sealed envelope to protect the privacy of the writer
as well as the recipient.
